Ten Foot Pipe Coupling Types

time2011/10/20

Various types of pipe are manufactured in standard lengths for convenience in transporting and storing pipe materials at wholesale and retail levels. Ten foot lengths of pipe are standard for most kinds of pipe. Making long runs with pipe requires equal coupling standard lengths. Appropriate coupling devices are available for all types of pipe. Be sure to select the proper type for your project.
Galvanized Pipe
Galvanized pipe was in common use for water supply lines before the invention of PVC pipe. In some areas of the country, it is still in use. You can create new galvanized pipe lines, or extend existing galvanized pipe lines, using threaded equal coupling devices called unions. Insert threaded male ends of galvanized pipe into unions that are threaded on the inside. Use plumber's pipe thread tape to ensure a leak-proof coupling.
PVC Pipe
PVC pipe has replaced galvanized pipe for many water supply applications. Most sprinkling and plant watering systems use PVC pipe. Couple PVC with one of two types of union. Female unions are threaded on the inside to accept threaded male lengths of pipe. Use plumber's tape to achieve a tight fit. Couple lengths of PVC for sprinkler systems using glue-bonded unions. Special solvent-based glue fuses the pipe and union equal coupling chemically. Each union has an internal ridge at the center line of the union to ensure equal insertion of pipes from each end.
